TRAI Rules in Favour of Net Neutrality

On 8th Feb 2016 in a landmark move the Telecom Regulation Authority of India (TRAI) issued the Prohibition of Discriminatory Tariffs for Data Services Regulations, 2016, a decisive move in favour of net neutrality regime in India. The regulator seems to have been moved by the fact that since a majority of the population are yet to be connected to the internet, allowing service providers to define the nature of access would be equivalent of letting Telecom Service Providers shape the users’ internet experience. The decision comes in the aftermath of months of heated public debate and campaigns on the issue between Facebook and telecom companies on one side and neutrality activists and start-ups on the other side. India has now joined a select few countries that have protected net neutrality and barred zero-rating services
